The 8th Urban Language Seminar will be held in Changchun on June 25 - 27, 2010. It is hosted by the School of Foreign Language Education at Jilin University in cooperation with the China Centre for Linguistic and Strategic Studies at Nanjing University, the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS at Utrecht University. The seminar aims to encourage international academic communication and cooperation, provide an opportunity for scholars at home and abroad to exchange views and ideas in the field of urban language studies, and expects contributions on the formation of new linguistic landscapes in urban centres in China and Europe
The theme of the Seminar is: Industrialization, Language Contact and Identity Formation in China and Europe
Suggested topics:
1. The development in multilingual cities
2. Regional divergence, urban transformation, and shared identities
3. Language acquisition, language choice and language attitude
4. Language change, language loss and language loyalty
5. Language maintenance and language shift in urban area
6. Other related topics
The seminar will include keynote speeches delivered by prominent scholars in the field of urban linguistic studies. Network participants as well as interested scholars and researchers are welcome to the Seminar. The working languages are English and Chinese. An abstract in both English (around 500 words) and Chinese (around 800 characters) needs to be submitted as an email attachment to ULSeminar@gmail.com before March 31, 2010.
